DUBAI: With almost 54 per cent of the major fashion retailers currently having outlets in Dubai and the retailing in the UAE expected to reach Dhs200 billion by 2017, the College of Fashion & Design’s (CFD) competitive programmes will train homegrown talents to meet market demand for jobs in the fashion retail sector.

The fashion industry is growing by a 5 per cent on average each year, according to an analysis by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) earlier this year.

The survey detailed that consumer spending, across various categories, is expected to hit a whooping Dhs750 billion by 2017, resulting in the opening up of a tremendous range of opportunities for young college graduates in the fashion retail industry.

The first fully accredited college of its kind in the region, CFD’s Bachelor in Fashion Business Management is set to fully prepare young Arab and expatriate fashion enthusiasts for job opportunities by offering students real-world knowledge.

CFD President, Prof. Abhilasha Singh says: “The retail and wholesale sector plays a very important role in contributing to the economy of the emirate as it represents 29.2 percent of the GDP of Dubai. As the market continues to grow, experts estimate that there will be continued substantial employability in the sector.”

She adds: “With the launch of CFD, students will benefit from the expertise of its multinational faculty and staff, preparing them for major challenges in the world of fashion, design, and business to make an effective contribution to the fashion industry. In addition, all the programs at CFD are focused on inculcating a global mindset and an entrepreneurial spirit among the students as the personal and professional Development skills are ingrained in each course delivery.”

Dubai’s trendy, youthful, high-spend-per-capita population has been a major factor in driving its retail growth, with many keen to stay up to date with the latest apparel, footwear, health and beauty and luxury product trends.

At CFD, students will receive unparalleled support, hands on experience and exciting projects to help them work independently or for manufacturers or retailers. Students will also learn how to identify the needs of consumers, track trends, communicate effectively with consumers through online and in-store advertising and promotions, and apply the necessary buying and selling skills for sustainable business practices.
