The Zay Initiative was founded by Dr Reem Tariq El Mutwalli, published author, with over 30 years of experience in art and cultural heritage. The vision celebrates the preservation of Arab heritage through the collection, documentation, conservation and exhibition of traditional costume/dress, jewellery, ornaments and modes of bodily adornment.
Done in traditional textiles and historical costumes of the Arab and Islamic worlds from the women’s articles of dress from the Arab countries UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria & Egypt. Due to their deep cultural significance mark a turning point in UAE history. Few dresses in the Sultani Collection includes pieces that date back to the 1950s.
The main motive is to promote an understanding of the evolution and the culture of the region, building up public awareness of their traditional values and appreciation of this unique heritage, and the idea is to showcase them in exhibitions nationally and globally.
